Melasma is also known as chloasma or the mask of pregnancy. Melasma is the discoloration of the skin associated with pregnancy, birth control pills and other causes.  Melasma and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation are the most common type of pigmentation problems.

Melasma is characterized by symmetrical tan or brown patches of hyperpigmentation and is usually seen on the cheeks and forehead.  Melasma is more noticeable in darker skinned individuals. Exposure to sun increases the melanization. Melasma may be permanent or disappear and reappear with subsequent pregnancies or contraceptive usage.
